Six Mistakes Keeping You from Generating a Flood of Leads for Your Digital Products on Instagram

When I first started helping entrepreneurs grow and sell digital products on Instagram, I saw the same patterns over and over again. Some people blew up fast, selling out their courses and eBooks within weeks. Others? They struggled to get a single sale, despite having great products and putting in hours of effort.
The difference? Strategy.
Selling digital products on Instagram isn’t just about posting and hoping for the best. It’s about avoiding the common mistakes that keep you stuck and making small shifts that bring in a flood of leads—without working twice as hard.
I’ve coached countless entrepreneurs through this process, and I’m breaking down the six biggest mistakes I see over and over again. If you’re making even one of these, don’t worry—
I’ll show you exactly how to fix it.

Mistake #1: Inconsistent Effort
One of the biggest reasons people struggle to sell on Instagram? They show up inconsistently.
They’ll post a few times, talk about their product once or twice, and then disappear for weeks. And when they come back, their audience has moved on.
Here’s the truth—your audience isn’t thinking about you as much as you think they are. If you’re not consistently in front of them, they’ll forget what you do.
Let’s say you’re selling an eBook. You can’t just post about it once and expect sales to roll in. You need a system—a mix of Instagram posts, stories, Reels, and even IG Lives—to consistently remind people why they need it.
Fix it: Start small. Show up every day. Keep talking about your product—even when it feels repetitive to you.
Mistake #2: Unclear Messaging
Even if you’re posting regularly, it won’t matter if your messaging is confusing or vague.
A lot of entrepreneurs make the mistake of being too broad in their messaging. They’ll say things like: "Learn how to grow on social media!"
That doesn’t tell people what they’re getting or why they need it.
Now compare that to: "How to Get 10,000 Instagram Followers in 9 Months—Even If You’re Starting from Scratch."
That’s specific. It clearly tells people what problem you solve and what result they can expect.
Fix it: Make your messaging crystal clear. Answer these questions in every post:
✔️ What problem does your product solve?
✔️ Who is it for?
✔️ What’s the specific result they’ll get?
If your audience doesn’t immediately understand what you do, they won’t buy.
Mistake #3: Picking the Wrong Platform
Even with perfect messaging, you won’t see results if you’re selling on the wrong platform.
Instagram is amazing for selling visual products, courses, and coaching. But if you’re targeting corporate professionals or B2B clients, LinkedIn might be better.
I worked with a client who was selling high-ticket business coaching on Instagram. She was doing everything right—posting valuable content, showing up daily—but her sales were dead.
Why? Her audience wasn’t there.
We switched her focus to LinkedIn, and within weeks, she was generating high-quality leads effortlessly.
Fix it: Make sure your ideal clients are actually hanging out on Instagram before you spend all your time marketing there.
Mistake #4: Getting Discouraged Too Soon
I see this mistake constantly. Someone launches their first digital product, gets a few sales, and immediately thinks, "This isn’t working."
But here’s the reality—most launches don’t explode overnight.
One of my clients launched her first online course and only made three sales in the first week. She thought it was a failure. But instead of giving up, we:
✔️ Tweaked her messaging
✔️ Added a bonus to increase urgency
✔️ Tested different content formats (Reels, IGTV, Stories)
Two weeks later? She hit $10K in sales.
Most people are this close to success when they quit. But the ones who win? They keep going.
Fix it: Don’t assume your offer doesn’t work just because it doesn’t sell instantly. Adjust your strategy and test at least 12 different approaches before making big changes.
Mistake #5: Narrowing Too Quickly
Niching down is important. But niching down too soon can actually hurt you.
I once worked with an entrepreneur selling a course for freelance graphic designers. At first, she wanted to target only "freelance graphic designers in the healthcare industry."
That was way too specific. She was limiting her audience before she even had leads coming in.
We broadened her niche to “freelance graphic designers who want to scale.” Once she had a steady stream of leads, we started refining her audience based on who engaged the most.
Fix it: Start broad, then narrow down once you have enough leads to see patterns.
Mistake #6: Unrealistic Expectations
The biggest mindset mistake? Expecting massive sales numbers right away—and then feeling like a failure when they don’t happen.
I had a client who was panicking because her Instagram sales funnel was converting at 5%.
She thought that was terrible.
But when we compared it to industry standards, she realized she was actually doing amazing.
Here’s the truth:
The industry average for conversion rates is 1-2%.
If your funnel is converting at 5%, you’re crushing it.
Most entrepreneurs assume they should be getting 20%+ conversion rates. And when they don’t, they panic and change their entire strategy. But when you actually know the numbers, you stop second-guessing yourself.
Fix it: Set realistic expectations and compare your results to industry standards—not just what you think should be happening.
Final Thoughts: Small Fixes = Big Wins
If you’re struggling to generate leads and sell your digital products, it’s not because your offer isn’t good enough. It’s because small mistakes are keeping you stuck.
Show up consistently.
Make your messaging crystal clear.
Choose the right platform for your audience.
Keep going even when sales start slow.
Start broad, then narrow your niche.
Set realistic expectations based on actual numbers.
Most entrepreneurs don’t need a new offer or more content. They just need to fix the small things—and suddenly, everything clicks.
